I was bored, because we all know that 4th quarter means a lot of commercials and McCain won't go on until the game ends so he can have network coverage, which leaves me with quizzes. I think only [info]shezan will appreciate this one. *g*

Your Issue Profile: 32% Obama, 68% McCain

When it gets down to it, you tend to best match John McCain. But he's not the perfect candidate for you, and you may not be sold on him yet.

Obama shares a good number of your views too, so you might want to give him a second look.

It all comes down to which issues matter to you the most.

Artist Spotlight on [info]chibitoaster / [info]littleblackbow!

Recently, I had the pleasure of meeting Rana at Terminus. In Potterdom she's know as [info]chibitoaster on Live Journal and [info]littleblackbow on Insane Journal. She's definitely a jill-of-all-trades, writing, cosplaying (her Lockhart is aces, man *G*) and arting her way through fandom.

In the spirit of art reccing, I wanted to do an 'Artist Spotlight' on Rana so that others could familiarise themselves with her work. I know that I've recced several of her Snape pieces, but even I was pleasantly surprised to find out she draws Harry/Draco and a host of other pairings, too.

So without further adieu, I bring you a sampling of Rana's art. And if you love her work as much as I do, don't be shy. Stop by her journals and tell her so!

Thoughts on Next-Gen Fic

I've been thinking about why I'm interested in next generation fic, given my utter disinterest in tertiary* HP character fan fic. Is there a discernible difference? Scorpius, Albus Severus, James, Lily jr, Hugo, and Rose are for the most part, just names. There is a bare hint of character in the epilogue; we get more insight into Albus Severus than say, for example, Blaise. But I'm interested in their lives, in reading and writing fic about them because we know so much about their parents' lives. We can extrapolate a heck of a lot because of their family histories. That's where the attraction for next gen writing/reading is for me.

Thinking of that made me smile about fandom, because it seems to me that the next-gen loving group majority has created certain conventions for these kids. Well of course Albus Severus gets sorted into Slytherin and naturally Scorpius is a Gryffindor. AS/S is a given, Rose is pretty and popular, Lily is shy and sweet, etc. Now I've not read every next gen fic there is but these characterizations keep popping up. I'm not complaining; I think it's rather cool.

As for me, while I am interested in next gen fic, I want Harry or Draco or Snape or Hermione or Ron* to be a big part of the story. So yeah, I'm all about the cross-gen. Draco/Albus Severus or Harry/Scorpius gets me excited. So if you see any fics like that, direct them my way, please. :-)

Dragon Con, last report

My second day at Dragon Con was more relaxed than the first. I spent some time people watching. I took photos of and with Darth Vader, Cylons, and Stormtroopers. Here's a funny picture for you.
Darth Vader and foe )
I also have a very lovely photograph of me with James Callis. (Gaius Baltar of BSG)!! I went to the dealer rooms and the art show. Believe me, you can spend literally hours just browsing through these rooms and you still won't see everything. I did find gorgeous art for my living room. It's a depiction of a huge tree with wide spread limbs with deep green leaves. The trunk is peppered with lights, because it's the palace of faerie! I fell in love with it. :D

In one of the dealer rooms, Margaret Weis signed a copy of Rose of the Prophet Trilogy for me, which was awesome. That trilogy is my favorite of all the Weis/Hickman books.

But back to James Callis. He was so very, very nice! He was gracious and sweet and took the time to talk to me a bit about his character. "Well, Gaius is a twit, isn't he? He's a genius, he's an idiot, he's a scientist, etc." When my friend took a picture of us (the us being me and JAMES CALLIS -- eeee!) he asked her if the first shot was okay, and if she needed more time. What a doll! I did not gush all over him (to his face) I swear.

I went to four more panels over the last two days; the one that turned out to be the best was a panel I went to at the last minute to kill time while my sister went to a Dr Who thing. Mine was about working for the computer gaming industry. It was fascinating! While most of the discussion centered around programming, level design, data base/server management, and IT jobs--game content creation was touched on. I was surprised to learn that freelance writers contribute a fair amount of content. Neat stuff. What else was fun about this panel was that the audience consisted of thirty or so men, and only four women.

Next year should be loads of fun too. :-)

LJ/IJ housekeeping

Help me out and please let me know where you post exclusively. Now that I'm reading both IJ and LJ again, I'm reading duplicate posts.

I know that [info]snegurochka_lee posts different content on IJ, but is there anyone else like that?

Please respond only if you post to one journal or if you split your content between journals. Thank you!

No one is getting removed, I'm just organizing filters so I can read more efficiently. :D

My second Dragon Con post, now with pictures, is coming soon!

The World is my Oyster - and me Without Tabasco

Looks like I'm back in shape. I realized it when I skipped up the subway stairs, arms laden with bags and walked briskly to the bus stop - all without even noticing the pace. Body fat's 22.3, up from the recent low of 21, but oddly, I'm ten pounds lighter. Being 10 pounds lighter doesn't make me close to "thin" - I still weigh 160 pounds. Thankfully, I know the difference between an "athletic" body and an unhealthy skinny one. I'm not sure what next steps there are since I've all but abandoned the 18% body fat goal given current life turmoil. Hey, at least I continue to work out and make good food choices. I've even tried rock wall climbing, so I'll call progress.

Dragon Con Day One

Dragon Con is, as always, a spectacle. It's such a delight to see so very many people displaying devotion for their favorite fandom. I never get tired of seeing stormtroopers, alien costumes, fifth element girls, anime girls, fairy girls (and boys -- not too many of those, sadly), superman, spiderman, klingons in full makeup, beautiful victorian era costumed men and ladies, and, well you get the idea.

Yesterday (day one), I went to the Nathan Fillion and Alan Tudyk panel. They were both very funny and comfortable talking to a full ballroom's worth of people. The audience members were able to ask questions and one girl sang her question -- the first lines to one of Penny's songs from Dr. Horrible, the bit where she's asking people to sign her petition. The girl was nervous but it was a lovely moment because Nathan was so gracious about it. :D Another girl asked about his hammer of course -- and he and Alan made jokes about that calling it a peepee. I think the girl wanted him to say penis. :D

Next I went to another ballroom venue -- the BSG one. The actors who play Helo, Admiral Adama, Colonel Tigh, Chief Tyrol, Gaius Baltar!!!, the technical advisor, and a guy who will be a big character next season were there. That panel was enjoyable too, but not as funny, probably because there were so many of them. Edward James O. received a standing ovation when he walked in (apparently this was his first con ever, so that was neat) and Michael Logan (Tigh) got a love, and I mean a LOT of love from the crowd. I had no idea he was that popular, but he is! The guy who plays Chief Tyrol was hilarious; he kept telling jokes and interrupting the other panelist's comments. I must admit each and every time James C. (Gais) spoke, I melted in my chair. I just adore him.

I did drive-by to the art show and dealer rooms; I'll give those a deeper look on Saturday. I stopped by the law of fandom panel briefly, I met up with [info]dementordelta and met a new lj person, which was neat because she was knitting her heart out and I'd forgotten to bring my knitting. That ended up being okay because she's a fast knitter and I'm as slow as molasses, alas. But stll, fun stuff!

Later I went to the Dr. Horrible sing-along-blog show, and that turned out to be a lot more fun that I anticipated. There was a huge screen on one side of the stage; actors were on the other side playing out the parts and lip-syncing. The majority of us knew the songs by heart so it was great fun, hundreds of us singing at the top of our lungs. :-) The only sad thing was the ballroom was packed and I'm sure some people were not allowed in. :(

After dinner I went to the Buffy Horror Picture show, which was a showing of 'Once More With Feeling' and that was also quite fun! Like the Dr. Horrible show, actors were on stage playing the parts we saw on the screen, and we sang along and shouted rude things at the screen like "Shut up, Dawn!" every time the girl opened her mouth.

By then it was 11:30pm and I hit the adult fan fiction panel and again sat with delta and the knitting goddess, and it was HILARIOUS watching people walk out one by one as the talk from the panel descended into favorite kinks. Hee hee!

Today I'll take lots of pictures so I can share them with you. :-)

Kindle

Spent last night messing with my first ebook in 5 yrs. I'm taking it on my vacation next week, so I want to fill it up with as much fanfic as I can. For now, things that I've noticed:

  • Clicking back and forward does that exactly, click. Which might mean I can't use it for reading in bed if Mr. Logovo is trying to sleep. The amount of text in the screen, even at the smallest adjustable font, is about 1/3 to 1/2, so click-click-click.

  • The screen is wonderfully sharp and readable. I have no experience with these newer ebooks (I had a short and sad fling with earlier generations) so I was somewhat surprised.

  • Whispernet coverage is pretty good in my city, so I had some fun previewing books last night. I'll probably download a couple before I leave on my trip. No coverage in Alaska (or Montana) so I have to do it here.

  • I understand that a new Kindle is coming out in October, so I'm wondering if they'll take care of some of the ergonomic problems, mainly the clicking on to the next page by accident, because of the way you are holding the device.

For now I'm very excited, glad I got it, although at $259 I still think it's priced too high. I'm looking forward to seeing ebooks priced at just under $100.

Dr. Who?

I don't watch Dr. Who, but I know many on my flist do, so I thought I'd link you to my sister's lj. She adores Dr. Who, and she has written numerous long reviews of each episode. One of her reviews got the attention of the writer of 'Dalek' -- so strange to write a word that I know nothing about! -- and he answered a lot of her questions, and other people who commented got theirs answered too, and I thought that was pretty cool of him. :)
